Cold Laser Therapy

Precision treatment to relieve pain, stimulate healing and more

Cold laser therapy is the use of a low-level laser that treats a variety of problems without raising the temperature of the skin and tissue more than a few degrees above normal body temperature. At Dynamic Chiros, we use cold laser therapy for a variety of therapeutic reasons. The physical process of the laser’s design amplifies the photons, enabling a trained healthcare provider to use cold laser therapy to relieve pain, stimulate healing, or for a wide variety of other beneficial systemic effects.

How does cold laser therapy work?

During the procedure, low-level light of different wavelengths and outputs is applied directly to the afflicted area, allowing the body tissue to absorb the light. This red and near-infrared light stimulates a reaction in the damaged cells, causing them to respond with a physiological reaction that helps promote and accelerate the healing process. And because the therapeutic laser amplifies the photons in the light, treatment is able to reach tissues up to two inches below the skin’s surface.

Cold laser therapy treats a wide range of issues

Cold laser therapy can be used to stimulate any and all types of cells, including muscle, ligament, nerves, cartilage and more. By mitigating pain and stimulating cell regeneration, it helps it to treat a vast number of conditions without the use of dangerous prescription pain medication. Cold laser therapy has been used to treat:

  • Bell’s palsy

  • Migraines

  • Sinusitis

  • TMJ

  • Tension headaches

  • Cervical disc herniation

Is cold laser treatment painful or difficult?

Cold laser therapy is noninvasive, and completely safe — it has been in use for more than 20 years, and hundreds of clinical studies and scientific papers have both documented its safety and proven its effectiveness. The procedure itself is relatively quick, lasting anywhere from five minutes to 20 minutes, depending upon the total area that needs to be covered and the condition being treated. And in the hands of a trained healthcare provider, cold laser therapy is completely painless, with most patients feeling absolutely nothing at all (though some report feeling a slight tingling sensation, thought to be brought on by the increased blood flow of the treated area). Plus, no serious side effects have been observed or reported.

How quickly will it take to feel the results of cold laser therapy?

While you may feel some of the beneficial effects of cold laser therapy immediately, it is much more common to notice the changes several hours after treatment. Patients often report relief of pain and an increased range of motion soon after treatment, though more chronic and severe conditions will require several treatment sessions to produce noticeable results.

Cold laser therapy doesn’t just mask your underlying condition — it helps your body to speed up and strengthen its innate healing process. This means the relief it provides isn’t temporary. Its effects add up over time, so the more treatments you receive, the stronger and more permanent the effect will be. Patients can reasonably expect the results to be long lasting, and in some cases, the issue at hand may be permanently resolved.

Are these any other benefits to cold laser therapy

Yes! Cold laser therapy is often used to treat inflammation caused by rheumatoid arthritis and other chronic autoimmune diseases. People with acute or chronic pain — such as those suffering from fibromyalgia and carpal tunnel syndrome — are known to experience a lessening in their symptoms. It has even been shown to help rejuvenate the skin and treat a variety of dermatological issues.

Is cold laser therapy used alone, or in conjunction with other treatments?

While not uncommon for a patient’s treatment plan to consist solely of cold laser therapy, it’s generally used in conjunction with other treatments. At Dynamic Chiros, your chiropractor will walk you through your full treatment plan and explain if and how cold laser therapy will be used to help get you back to living a happy, healthy and more mobile life.
